The heavy rainfall this past week has certainly made its mark at WHS. At approximately 6:30 a.m. on Friday, October 12, steady water leaked through the gym foyer ceiling. Smaller leaks were reported in the administration kitchen, a classroom, the first floor science hallway, and in the library.

Custodians were called immediately to vacuum the water and place three large barrels under the main leakage sources. The small kitchen leak was fixed soon after, but the foyer leak was passed on to the roofing company. The custodians were unaware of the cause, and had no knowledge of when the leaks would be fixed.

Custodian Pat Golden surmised, “The tin flashing, which is installed to prevent water from seeping through the roof, may be dysfunctional due to a buildup of rainfall in the ceiling.” Director of Facilities Mike Needleman noted the damage would not be too severe, though.

The exact source of the leak would be difficult to pinpoint. According to Principal Hobin, the water collected in the roof traveled down beams and rafters to certain areas of the building, meaning a leak in a classroom, for example, does not indicate the main source of water collection.

Principal Hobin noted the Ward building has had similar problems in the past. “The roof company has come out a few times this year to do patches and assessments, but it clearly hasn’t been as successful as we would’ve liked it to be. We are prepared to relocate classrooms if the leaks become too much of a problem,” he said.

The roof company was called to repair the leak later in the day. Custodians and maintenance personnel will be working on the leak and it is expected to be patched within a few days.
