The Class of 2020 hosted a Masquerade Winter Ball on February 3 from 7:00-10:00 in the Ward Gymnasium. Although masks were optional, many students participated in the theme, and dressed more formally than usual. Even the Bulldog statue in the foyer wore a mask.

Decorations were festive. Strings of lights with white, black, gold, and silver balloons of different sizes lent elegance to the occasion. Masks ranged in style from Venetian to Mardi Gras. Black sheets covered the trophy cases in the foyer, providing a background for group photos. A side table contained a vase with colorful “selfie props” on sticks, such as glasses and mustaches.

As for food, the usual brownies, cookies, pizza, and punch were provided for a minimal cost. This, together with the $10.00 to $15.00 ticket price, generated profit for the Sophomore Class.

The music featured hip-hop and pop songs with 90s and early-2000s throwbacks, as well as current hits. Sophomore Tyree Brooks said, “I had a really good time at the dance. At first, I wasn’t a big fan of the music, until they started playing songs from my past (early-2000s).”

The evening was a success. Class of 2020 President Maya Champ said, “I’m happy with the turnout we received, considering a slow start in ticket sales, mostly attributed to midterms. We made a substantial amount of money — a couple thousand dollars — which we were grateful for, considering this was our first major fundraiser.”
