On Wednesday, December 6th several Westerly High School students were involved in physical and verbal confrontations resulting in one student being sent to the hospital and seven students being arrested.

There were two officially recognized physical conflicts.  The first was between a freshman boy and junior boy and the second altercation occurred between two underclassmen females.

Westerly High School principal, Mr. Todd Grimes, explained, “One I would call a fight and [the second fight] I would call an assault.”

A third incident occurred in the lunchroom “with no physical interaction” according to Mr. Grimes.

The principal also revealed each conflict was an isolated incident, and no ties between the fights were discovered.

When asked about the school’s actions to prevent further fighting and addressing many students concerns, Mr. Grimes said, “The response is not going to be to punish the whole school.”

Exacerbating the impact of the actual altercations was the social media reaction.

Administration and faculty expressed concern over the use of cell phones to record confrontations.  Instructional Coordinator, Mr. Anthony Lementowicz, said, “With technology you can use it for good and bad… but when people are videotaping humans being cruel to humans, I think that says something about where we are as a species.”

Both Mr. Grimes and Mr. Lementowicz affirmed that students who were involved in these altercations will be handled judiciously, and a day like December 6th will not be repeated.
