For the first time, the new scoreboard at Augeri Field showed a victory for the Bulldogs varsity football team. The score that appeared Friday night was a large one, with the Bulldogs beating Pilgrim by 5 touchdowns.

At first, it did not look like it would be a high scoring Westerly win, as Pilgrim scored first to make it 7-0. However, that touchdown would be the last time the Pilgrim Patriots would score for a very long time.

After neither team scored on their next drives, Tristan Turano rushed for a 30 yard touchdown on the Bulldog’s second drive. On their next drive, Turano doubled the amount of yards rushed in the previous drive, running for a 60 yard touchdown.

Time was running out in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs had an advantage. They were about to receive the ball with a 7 point lead, and even though it was unlikely that they would score, they would have the ball to start the second half. Little did they know, they were about to have an even bigger advantage.

With 1:11 left in the first half, Pilgrim punted the ball, but Junnie Rios blocked the punt. It then bounced into and out of the hands of Jose Martinez, and then made its way to the end zone, where Ryan Holloway recovered it for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs would really get going in the second half. They scored three more times, including one in which Xavier Ledbetter rushed for 48 yards. Then, Pilgrim scored to make it 42-14, but by then it was too late, as Ryan Holloway would prove. He returned a punt for 80 yards, which started a fireworks show coming from the quad.

One thing that helped the Bulldogs was that Pilgrim tried several times to make plays with a fourth down, but they all ended up being turned over, which let Westerly cruise to touchdowns.

The Bulldogs dominated on offense, defense, and special teams, during a great game in Westerly. They look to ride this momentum into next week’s game against West Warwick at Salvatore Augeri Field. Come support the Bulldogs and be a part of the fun!
