This last Saturday, the 23rd, the Westerly High School seniors hosted the annual Back to School Dance. This year the class put a new spin on the typical expectations for the first dance of the school year.

Senior adviser Mrs. Tallardy said that, “student DJs” became the one difference between the 2016 and 2017 dances.

Juniors Hedy Goodman and Annie Celico did a great job as DJs this year and mirrored last year’s performance at the Winter Ball.

Senior Kyle Wicklund said the two student DJs did “Fantastic” and “played great music all night.” Wicklund even claimed this dance was, “more lit” than the previous Back to School Dances he attended.

Junior Ciara Flood agreed the two student DJs did “a great job” and had an overall great time at this years Back to School Dance.

Goodman and Celico kept the dance floor at high energy and never dulled the excitement with slow songs.

Goodman and Celico ensured a balance between early 2000’s throwbacks to some of today’s top hits. Artist ranging from Beyoncé to Migos and even Sean Kingston were heard throughout the night.

One issue the DJs ran into was when students threw partially opened water bottles through the crowd, spraying water everywhere. It may have cooled a few people down in the oppressively hot gym, but the act could have become an issue with the equipment Goodman and Celico were using. Thankfully after a brief warning from the DJs, the water bottle antics ended.

Although the temperature in the gym was not ideal, it was impossible to stop dancing with the DJs’ constant supply of bops. Tallardy advises next year’s seniors to “buy tons of water to sell at the dance” because of how warm the gym was.

The first high school dance can be nerve racking as freshman Mackenzie Fusaro revealed, but after dancing to the DJs’ playlist, a bad experience seemed nearly impossible.

From the overall student reviews and the energy of Saturday night’s event, using student DJs for upcoming dances could be a route to take. Financially and musically the student DJs made a good impression and helped benefit the seniors class profit overall.

Student’s laughed, danced and yelled lyrics all night and hopefully more of the student body will attend the Homecoming with just as much exhilaration.

I disagree with this article. I was at the dance and did not enjoy it, especially the music choices.
