With the football season at its’ end, head coach, Duane Maranda, along with captains, Josh Gougon, Ethan Holloway, Seth Rohdin, and Matt Kapfer, reflected positively on the season.

Maranda was asked about the challenges faced this year and he answered, “First to come together, as a group, as a family, and start to trust one another.”

Maranda also spoke about the future of the team, which he sees as “very very bright.” He said, “We’re going to have a full offseason in the weight room where we can get bigger and stronger, and get in better shape.”

When asked if he has seen improvement, he answered, “Absolutely!  Each and every week we’ve gotten a little bit better… We’re getting better not only plays-wise, but we’re getting better at learning how to control those emotions so we can play with those.”

Maranda, when asked about how he is preparing for this year’s Turkey Day Game in a way that may be different from Stonington answered confidently, “We think that we probably practice harder and better than most other opponents.”

Captain Josh Gougon was very happy with this year.  “I think it went really well, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.” Also, when asked about how he felt about facing Stonington this year he said, “With this week and a half of practice we’ve had it’s definitely going to help us in the long run. I feel like our team as a whole is looking for a win this year.”

Most of Westerly can agree with Gougon as many are very hopeful for a win.

Captain Ethan Holloway when asked how he thought the season went said, “I think the season has been pretty good… I think what Coach did for us is the best thing that’s happened to this program in a while.”  Holloway added “I think there’s a good future for Westerly football.”

When, finally asked  if he felt prepared for Turkey Day he said, “I think we’re more than prepared, and we still have some time to finish it up.”

Captain Seth Rohdin, seemed very pleased with this season as he stated, “I think the season went really good overall,” “we made it to playoffs for the first time since 2012.” Then, when asked about preparation for Turkey day Rohdin stated “I think we have watched enough film to know what they’re going to do. If our offense gets the touchdowns we should be able to win.” Many routing for Westerly are anticipating those touchdowns.

Captain Matt Kapfer had much to say about the season. “The season’s gone well; we’re 5 and 5.  We’ve been struggling at the end, but it’s gonna be a big game, Turkey Day. We’re both evenly matched; we’re 5 and 5 — they’re 4 and 4. It’s going to be a tough battle.  It’s going to come down to heart and who wants it more.”

As of now it seems as though Westerly wants it more. Kapfer also stated, “We have seen improvement especially in the weight room.  Enthusiasm has gone up!”

When asked about preparation for the game against Stonington, he answered, “I think we are prepared.  We’re watching film everyday. We are acknowledging the fact that they are a good team and we’re a good team, but it’s just gonna come down to the day.  Who’s prepared more is based on heart and how much effort we put into the game and working out during the week.”

Westerly fans will all be expecting a great amount of effort from our team.

Westerly plays Stonington this Thursday, November 24th on Algiere Field. As the captains and coach all said, many throughout Westerly hope for a good game and great effort to break this losing streak.
