Pathways In Technology and Early College High School (PTech) is a brand new program, offered in only a handful of schools across Rhode Island. This special program provides a unique opportunity for students to tailor their high school career in a particular field. Each of the different PTech sites are focused on different career fields. The Westerly PTech program focuses on modern manufacturing.

An important aspect of Ptech is the partnerships students make with local businesses and the Community College of Rhode Island. Electric Boat, the largest employer in Rhode Island, has taken on a significant roll with this innovative system.  Students will have a job right out of high school as well as an Associate’s Degree at no cost to them.

The program will hopefully expand. As PTech becomes more widely known and student successes become more prominent, more and more students from around the state moving up from junior high will enrolled in the program at Westerly High School.

Sophomore Thomas McLaughlin, who is a part of PTech at Westerly, introduced Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo to the students and faculty of Westerly High School at the PTech opening ceremony on the first day of school is excited about his involvement in the new program.

McLaughlin is a fan of robotics and machinery and explained that this is why he became involved with this program. He told the students and the assembly how,“ in the end we’ll be able to learn how to use high tech robots to create different objects.”

Mr. McLellan who is a staff member of the high school and plays a significant role in the PTech program at Westerly expressed pride in McLaughlin. “Thomas would like to become a civil engineer,” according to McLellan, ”and PTech works very well as a stepping stone [toward that goal].”

Throughout the introduction speech, McLaughlin acknowledged how PTech, “gives skills and knowledge to help pursue a career in engineering or go on to study further in college.”

McLaughlin thanked the Governor of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, Rhode Island Manufacturers Association, General Dynamics, Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Department of Education and Westerly Public Schools for their roles in making PTech possible.

Throughout this year, Westerly will learn more about PTech as it progresses.  Hopefully it will create multiple successes for students participating as well as successes for the school community in general.
